About Hunting in North Carolina

North Carolina's geographic diversity — spanning from the Atlantic barrier islands of the Outer Banks to the 6,000-foot peaks of the Great Smokies — creates outstanding hunting opportunities for an impressive array of species. The state has one of the most robust wild turkey populations in the Southeast, with approximately 200,000 birds inhabiting every county. Spring gobbler hunting is enormously popular, and North Carolina's birds are known for being responsive and aggressive callers in April.

White-tailed deer hunting is excellent across all three physiographic regions, with the coastal plain's agricultural areas producing the largest-bodied deer and the mountain zone offering a more rugged hunting experience. The state's black bear population is one of the largest in the East, concentrated in both the Appalachian Mountains of the west and the coastal swamps and pocosin bays of the east. The Currituck Sound and Outer Banks coastal zone provides some of the East Coast's finest waterfowl hunting, particularly for canvasbacks, redheads, and tundra swans. Hunters planning public land hunts must purchase the NC Game Lands license.

🎯 Expert Hunting Tips for North Carolina

  • For deer on the coastal plain, hunt the Roanoke River Bottomlands near Halifax County during the November gun season — the swamp hardwoods concentrate deer movement on dry ridges and creek crossings.
  • Apply for quota bear hunts at Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge near Columbia — the coastal black bear population is one of the densest in the nation, and managed hunts provide excellent success rates.
  • Spring turkey hunting in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard requires getting above 3,000 feet elevation where birds use open-top ridges and rocky outcrops for strutting in May.
  • Duck hunters should position on the impoundments at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge near Swan Quarter — the 40,000-acre lake holds tens of thousands of diving ducks in November and December.
